Sekadar tahu, pada saat ditemukan, intan itu tampak sangat unik. Salah satu sisi/permukaannya, sangat halus dan rata. Hal tersebut membuat para ahli menjadi yakin, bahwa intan tersebut adalah bagian dari intan yang lebih besar lagi, yang patah karena kondisi alam.

Tak lama setelah ditemukan, intan Cullinan dibeli oleh pemerintah Transvaal (nama salah satu daerah di Afrika Selatan waktu itu), untuk diberikan sebagai hadiah ulang tahun kepada Edward VII, Raja Inggris Raya. Tepatnya, pada tanggal 22 Januari 1907.

Pada tahun berikutnya, Raja Edward memerintahkan agar intan tersebut diasah dan dipotong-potong.
